Narrative

Tiger Beetles, family Cicindelidae, are actually very small beetles. They derive their name from their habits. The adults usually are found on sandy beaches near streams, rivers, and lakes where they both run and fly quickly. These species will actually chase down a small insect and grab it with their strong jaws and eat it. Difficult to catch because of their speed and ability to fly, they are a favorite with scientists because of the beautiful patterns on their elytra (protective front wings).

There are about 109 United States and Canadian species in this family and perhaps as many as 2,600 worldwide.
