Narrative
Parides Ascanius Group text is based on the older Rothschild and Jordan revision of the New World Papilionidae. Changes based on the DAlmeida listing have also been noted. Also included are changes based on various articles. These changes have been noted to comply with the taxonomy as published in 2004 by Gerardo Lamas in his checklist of Neotropical Lepidoptera. The Rothschild and Jordan text as modified by DAlmeida has been retained because for many years it was the only good source of information on this group. Many serious Neotropical Papilionidae collections in the world are based on the Rothschild and Jordan organization.
Parides ascanius group can be separated from the other Parides groups because they have white fringe spots, hindwing submarginal spots, and usually a tail. (Note: Many of the Graphium species mimic the Parides species, and these two groups are easily confused. It is important to remember that in the Graphium group the red body spots that characterize the Parides group are located on the base of their wings. In the Parides group, there are red spots located on the body.)

Parides dares - Nicaragua
Parides montezuma* - Mexico to Venezuela
Parides chamissonia and Parides perrhebus are no longer valid species and have been moved into Parides bunichus. Parides dares has been moved into Parides photinus.
