Narrative

Papilio-thoas group text is based on the older Rothschild and Jordan revision of the New World Papilionidae. Also noted are changes based on the DAlmeida listing. Some changes based on various articles have also been included. These changes are noted to comply with the taxonomy as published in 2004 by Gerardo Lamas in his checklist of Neotropical Lepidoptera. The Rothschild and Jordan text as modified by DAlmeida has been retained because for many years that was the only good source of information on this group. Many serious Neotropical Papilionidae collections in the world are based on the Rothschild and Jordan organization.

Papilio thoas group, thirteen known species, has been modified taxonomically since Rothschild and Jordan did their revision of the New World Papilios in 1906. The species are (an * indicates this species is pictured):

Gerardo Lamas in his 2004 checklist of Neotropical Lepidoptera changed the name of Papilio lycophron to Papilio astyalus. He also raised Papilio thoas meloneus to a full species and changed the genus to Heraclides for this group of Papilionidae.
