Narrative

Papilio-anchisiades group text is based on the older Rothschild and Jordan revision of the New World Papilionidae. Changes based on the DAlmeida listing have been noted. Also included are some changes based on various articles. These changes are included to comply with the taxonomy as published in 2004 by Gerardo Lamas in his checklist of Neotropical Lepidoptera. The Rothschild and Jordan text as modified by DAlmeida has been retained because for many years it was the only good source of information on this group. Many serious Neotropical Papilionidae collections in the world are based on the Rothschild and Jordan organization.

Papilio anchisiades group is primarily limited to the American Tropics with some of the species being found as far north as Mexico.

The Papilio anchisiades group contains the following 12 species (an * indicates that this species is pictured):

SPECIES - - - - - LOCATION
Papilio hyppason* - Guyanas and Brazil to Bolivia
Papilio pelaus* - Cuba, Haiti, and Puerto Rico
Papilio oxynius - Cuba
Papilio epenetus - West Ecuador
Papilio chiansiades* - Upper Amazon (Peru, etc.)
Papilio pharnaces* - Mexico
Papilio erostratus* - Mexico
Papilio erostratinus* - East Mexico
Papilio rogeri* - Yucatan Mexico & Br. Honduras
Papilio anchisiades* - Mexico to Argentina
Papilio isodorus* - Colombia to Bolivia
Papilio rhodostictus* - Costa Rica to Ecuador

Gerardo Lamas in his 2004 checklist of Neotropical Lepidoptera reduced Papilio rhodostictus to a subspecies of Papilio isodorus. He also reduced Papilio pharnaces to a subspecies of Papilio rogeri and moved Papilio erostratinus to a subspecies of Papilio erostratus. (He also added another subspecies, Papilio erostratus vazquezae of Guerrero, to the erostratus complex.)

Gerardo Lamas also changed the genus to Heraclides for the above group.
